Do You HAVE to Speak Spanish to Be Latina?

On this Latina Equal Pay Day, I'm diving into my feelings of Impostor Syndrome as a Latina, especially after attending another series of Latina events... Read More "Do You HAVE to Speak Spanish to Be Latina?"

I am La Ceiba

What is La Ceiba?

La Ceiba is the national tree of Puerto Rico. Its roots grow above the ground and reach far and wide around the center of its trunk toward the rest of the world. When I first saw this tree in Coconut Grove, Miami, I felt like I was looking in a mirror. My roots connect to the island, and my mission is to tell the stories of my ancestors.

How am I telling the stories of La Ceiba?

Since 1999, I’ve been publishing stories about my family’s journey from the island of Puerto Rico to the islands of Nueva Yol’ to the Islands of Adventure in Orlando for various types of print and online publications, as well as platforms like Wattpad.

Why do I write in English?

English is my first language, and it’s the language most people around the world understand. But I love speaking Spanish even though I sound like a Super Gringa. 🙂

I am a clear, in-color version of La Ceiba.

Leadership and Service

It started as an Americorps*VISTA in Colorado: Matching seniors with kids who needed them; and vice versa.

These days it’s @CareerTias: Matching my hijastra and sobrinos with mentors for navigating the digital world my generation (unfortunately?) built for them.

My novel THE NINE LIVES OF MARIA LA GATA is dedicated to them as a guidebook.

Because history repeats itself.

Value of Storytelling

When you know your story, you know who you are.
