In 2009, I participated in a memoir writing workshop led by Esmeralda Santiago, author of the famous “When I Was Puerto Rican.” I absolutely worshipped Esmeralda and I was convinced her brilliance would rub off on me and my novel-in-progress, THE GENESIS OF CHANGE, would become a huge bestseller. I pitched an agent at Bantam Books and broke all the rules of querying, mostly because I never bothered to ask anyone what the rules are. Yeah. I had A LOT to learn, but most importantly, I needed some experiences that would beat me down, force some humble pie down my throat and teach me to focus on the story, not my byline in lights.
